Spring 2005 anime - initial impressions
The new season's started and the fansubs of the first episodes are starting to come out. So far I've only taken in first episodes for The Law of Ueki, Loveless, Sousei no Aquarion, and Speed Grapher...
The Law of Ueki - Paku Romi!! She's Ueki, but she still sounds exactly like Ed. Recognized Kawakami Tomoko as Ueki's schoolmate and friend Ai, and though the mad doctor sounded familiar I couldn't place him. Looks like another shounen action-comedy with a supernatural bent. Ueki has the ability to turn any bit of trash into a tree. A god searching for a champion offered Ueki any of his powers and that's what Ueki chose. The problem is that now he has to fight against other people who have also been granted powers so that one of them may ascend to godhood. I'm keeping this for the next few episodes, if only to hear Paku Romi - I miss Ed.
Loveless - Another female seiyuu playing a young male lead. ^_^ Minagawa Junko! - instantly recognizable since she sounds like a Ryoma filled with enough confusion and vulnerability in his voice to make The Prince of Tennis yaoi fangirls swoon as he's seduced by Soubi. And who can blame him. XD I'm won over. Some help identifying Soubi-sama's seiyuu would be very much appreciated. His voice has that low rumble that makes my knees weak. *discretely wipes drool from chin* (Or maybe it's just the subwoofer at my feet. XD ) But his cool, unflappable demeanor, his confident display of power, and his matter-of-fact declaration that he'd lay down everything for Ritsuka... This one's a keeper. And uh, the spell battle was pretty cool. ^_^
Ritsuka: What the hell are you doing?
Soubi: It's just a kiss.
Soubi: I'll win you over.
Soubi: Suki da yo, Ritsuka.
... I'm finished now. XD
Sousei no Aquarion - I turned my friend onto this one... the one who likes big giant robots and pretty animation. It's the latest effort from Kawamori Shoji of Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, and RahXephon fame. I didn't pay much attention to this so a second run through is in order, but I think I heard Onosaka Masaya (as Pierre) and Koyasu Takehito (as that weird angelic being that Apollo spoke to in Vector Sol)? There are a lot of references to Roman mythology in the names, and it appears that Apollo and Silvia are the reincarnations of a pair of lovers from the past. How that fits in with battling Fallen Angels and combining Aquarion mecha I have no idea. I have a feeling my curiousity won't last me through the series and I'll be dropping it after a few more episodes. I never have been a huge fan of mecha.
Speed Grapher - This one looks like it'll fill the void left by Gantz. Lots of black & tight-fitting clothing, gouts of blood, copious sexual imagery, and a perverted main character. ^_^;; The only seiyuu I could identify was Koyasu Takehito. He plays the flamboyant, over-zealous dancer with a murderous streak.
